Getting injured on the job can be a difficult event to work around. Chances are you’ve heard of workers’ compensation, but just how does it work? Are you able to apply if you take on any sort of injury at work? Understanding workers’ compensation can be difficult, so it’s important to know some of the basic facts behind these claims and what types of injuries and situations are covered.

What is Covered in Workers’ Compensation?

For one, not all situations make you eligible for workers’ compensation. Injuries must be directly related to your job. For example, if you trip at work and hit your head on your desk, you’re more than likely not eligible, but if you get ill as a direct result of working with dangerous toxic chemicals in your workplace situation, you likely have more of a claim.

It’s also important to note that not all types of injuries are covered. For example, self-inflicted injuries are not eligible. Additionally, if an employee is injured while going against a company’s policies, they likely won’t be covered. Psychiatric conditions are also not eligible for workers’ compensation. When in doubt, it’s a good idea to talk with a legal representative about what is and what is not covered.
